Black bear killings end Maryland's 2006 black bear hunting season ended Tuesday, the second day of the season, after hunters reached the harvest limit, state officials said. Forty-one bears were reported killed in the state's westernmost counties, Allegany and Garrett, by the time check-in stations closed at 8 p.m. State officials planned to close the season once hunters had taken between 35 and 55 bears, or on Saturday if the quota was not met.
U.S. District Court Judge Rules Lender Can't Reclaim $20k Paid On Mortgage
It's a short opinion, but some observers see it as a big step toward cracking down on predatory lenders. The case involved a lender who allegedly tricked a woman who was behind on her mortgage payments into selling her home when she thought she was merely refinancing. In a four-page opinion, U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz held that the lender cannot recover more than $20,000 in payments it made on her mortgage.
Emergent Biosolutions Inc. Of Gaithersburg Raises Estimated Price for Its Impending Ipo
Emergent BioSolutions Inc. of Gaithersburg has raised the estimated price for its impending initial public offering to $92 million, bucking the trend set by the public debuts earlier this year of several of the company's Maryland bioscience peers. In a Tuesday filing with federal regulators, Emergent unveiled its new estimate of about $14 to $16 per share for its 5.75 million shares, a jump from the $86 million figure it had estimated in earlier filings of its prospectus.
Family of Patient Who Lost Leg, Life to Flesh-Eating Bacteria Files Suit Against Hospital
The family of a Baltimore man who died after contracting flesh- eating bacteria filed suit this week against Northwest Hospital Center. Mark Bennett was admitted to Northwest in February 2004 for a moderate case of viral pneumonia, according to his son, Michael. Within weeks, the otherwise healthy, 88-year-old World War II veteran and former actor ended up having his leg amputated.

Federal Capital Partners and Angelo, Gordon & Co. are selling Charleston Manor in Ellicott City, Fairways at Towson, Seasons at Bel Air, Ashford at Cooper's Crossing in Landover Hills and the Ashford at Henson Creek in Temple Hills. Combined, the communities contain 3,500 units.
H&S Properties Development Corp. Joins Developer J. Joseph Clarke in Recreation Pier Deal
H&S Properties Development Corp. will partner with developer J. Joseph Clarke to restore Baltimore's dilapidated Recreation Pier, The Daily Record learned yesterday. The fate of the $50 million project on the Fells Point waterfront has been in question since February, when Clarke's New Orleans- based partner, HRI Properties, backed out of the deal. In May, Clarke's company, J.J. Clarke Enterprises Inc., began talks with Focus Development LLC.
Baltimore Jury Awards $2m in Hospital Death
A Baltimore jury awarded more than $2 million in damages to the family and estate of a 27-year-old man who died of septic shock nearly a day after arriving at a hospital emergency room. After a week-long trial and three days of deliberations, the six- person jury yesterday found Dr. Shoaib Hashmi liable for not coming to see Adrian "Tyree" Bennett after Hashmi was called by emergency room doctors and, later, a resident at the hospital.
