Maryland Court of Special Appeals Rules Home Security System Could Be Medical Treatment

A home security system can be considered medical treatment under the state's Workers' Compensation Act, the Court of Special Appeals has held. The decision could mean the Comfort Suites hotel in Chestertown will have to pay to install a home alarm system for Carol Simmons, who was brutally attacked by a robber while on the job in September 2006.

Baltimore Developer Looks at Buying Two of the Inner Harbor's Most Visible Retail Properties

Baltimore developer David Cordish has expressed interest in buying Harborplace and the Gallery, two of the Inner Harbor's most visible retail properties, which were put on the block in December by troubled mall owner General Growth Properties. "We're looking at it and think it would be right up our alley," Cordish said in an e-mailed statement. "The problem is that General Growth has such enormous debt that it is difficult to extract an individual property."

Former Maryland Gov. William Donald Schaefer Gives Two Homes to Charity

Just as he did as mayor of Baltimore, former Gov. William Donald Schaefer is giving back to the community. Schaefer's side-by-side homes in Chestnut Hill Cove will go on the market Thursday and proceeds from the sales will go toward endowing the William Donald Schaefer Civic Fund, a continuation of the fund he used as mayor to provide neighborhoods with grants for small projects, through the Baltimore Community Foundation.

Maryland's Heritage Tax Credit Moves to House Floor

A key House panel signed off Wednesday on Gov. Martin O'Malley's proposal to extend the state's Heritage Structure Rehabilitation Tax Credit, moving a bill to the floor with less than two weeks left in the legislative session. The House Ways and Means Committee approved the administration bill (HB 309) to continue the program, which can pay for up to 20 percent of the cost of improvements in areas that state and federal authorities deem historic.

Expansion of Hate-Crimes Law Proposed in Maryland Senate

The Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee on Wednesday considered legislation to ban the placement of swastikas and nooses on public or private property without the owner's permission and with the intent to threaten or intimidate a person or a group. The committee's hearing on the proposed expansion to Maryland's hate-crimes law came six years to the month after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a similar Virginia law designed to curtail public displays of a hateful symbol.
