Saying the clients' interests remain paramount, the Court of Special Appeals has thrown out a lawyer's claim that his co-counsel breached a case-referral agreement by not consulting him before settlement and telling the clients they had a potential malpractice claim against him.

In its 3-0 opinion, the intermediate court said holding a lawyer liable to another for advice given to a client could chill the attorney-client relationship and the guidance offered.
