Maryland's senators fell short this week in an effort to empower state officials to block a liquefied natural gas terminal proposed for Sparrows Point.

U.S. Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin and Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, both of whom have been vocal opponents of the proposal, tried to add a provision to a federal energy bill that would have required states to sign off on LNG projects. The amendment failed late Tuesday by a vote of 37 for and 56 against.
