Commentary: Newharbor: An Idea Whose Day has Come

Summary


Perhaps no landmark epitomizes the renaissance of Baltimore more than does Harborplace. For more than 30 years it has anchored the jewel of our city, the Inner Harbor. As with any marketplace, though, it requires rejuvenation and renewal. It is not enough to simply replace one ubiquitous mall retailer with another or to swap chain food purveyors.

The creation of Harborplace was a great and bold venture that broke with convention. So, too, must its renewal be a great step forward, a bold and innovative stroke of which we can be proud. It must showcase our city to the country and the world, just as the original Harborplace did 30 years ago.
