Cops get smart(phones)
The Baltimore Board of Estimates approved using $5.3 million in federal stimulus funding Wednesday to purchase a specially equipped Blackberry for each of the Police Department's more than 3,000 officers. The devices, known as "pocket cops," allow officers to run warrants and check vehicle registrations instantaneously. A police spokesman said the move is part of Commissioner Frederick Bealefeld's strategy to get officers out of their cars so they can engage with residents in the areas they patrol.See the full content of this document
