Cops get smart(phones)

The Baltimore Board of Estimates approved using $5.3 million in federal stimulus funding Wednesday to purchase a specially equipped Blackberry for each of the Police Department's more than 3,000 officers. The devices, known as "pocket cops," allow officers to run warrants and check vehicle registrations instantaneously. A police spokesman said the move is part of Commissioner Frederick Bealefeld's strategy to get officers out of their cars so they can engage with residents in the areas they patrol.
