The software engineer who created software for the line leak detectors used by ExxonMobil Corp. explained how and why the detector could not work as Exxon began its defense in a billion- dollar lawsuit filed by Jacksonville residents.

Linda J. Toth's underlying point Wednesday was that technicians who left a valve open while resetting, or calibrating, the detector at the Jacksonville gas station on Jan. 13, 2006, gave it an inaccurate starting point from which to assess whether or not there was a leak in future tests.
