When it comes to biotechnology, Maryland is known for having a number of promising startup companies rather than late-stage firms. A reality of the marketplace, however, is that venture capitalists are not inclined to fund these companies, which leaves them on their own to raise money. And doing that is a difficult proposition, not to mention a distinct distraction from getting products from the laboratory to market in a timely manner.
