Maryland Public Service Commission Tells Utilities to Find More Power

Maryland regulators have ordered the state's utilities to come up with new means of generating electricity to avoid the power shortfalls predicted to hit in about three years.

The Public Service Commission warned utilities in August that it might force them to find additional resources, but did not issue the order until Thursday night after deciding that it was unlikely that proposed transmission lines will be built by 2011. Without the new lines to alleviate the power shortage, the PSC said that it fears that the state will face serious reliability problems.
