Four years after the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy launched the P3 program -- patients, pharmacists, partnerships -- linking diabetic employees of several self-insured local companies to trained pharmacists for advice on medication and overall health and wellbeing, the program and its patients are thriving.

On average, one year after their employees voluntarily enrolled in the program, employers saved $1,000 per employee on medical claims costs, according to the university. Some businesses saved even more.
