Before unanimously endorsing a project to build up to 75 new houses in a blighted neighborhood, Milwaukee aldermen branched into a wider discussion of how to combat gentrification.

The influx of new housing projects and residents in formerly stagnant Milwaukee neighborhoods is causing assessments to increase on properties whether they've been redeveloped or not. This neighborhoodwide increase is driving property taxes beyond the limit of some residents' wallets, Alderman Willie Wade said during Tuesday's Zoning, Neighborhoods and Development Committee meeting.
