Opponents Urge Defeat of Md. Governor Martin O'malley's Re- Regulation Plan

Summary


A day after the governor said he supports partial re-regulation of the state's energy market, the debate raged Tuesday as several business groups urged the Senate Finance Committee to reject the idea.

Under Gov. Martin O'Malley's proposal, dubbed "rational re- regulation," new power plants would fall under the regulatory control of Maryland's Public Service Commission if the commission believed that such a move would best serve ratepayers. The commission also would plan when plants would be built rather than leaving that power in the hands of the utilities.
