Md. Prosecutors Seek Tougher Gang Law

Summary


Legislation to increase the prison sentences for violent crimes committed by gang members received strong support Tuesday from Maryland prosecutors, who called the measure necessary to crack down on the growing scourge of gang violence.

But the proposal drew scorn from the American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland, which derided the bill as unconstitutional, ineffective and an example of the misperception that long sentences equate to improved law enforcement.
