Sales at Maryland's largest auction of harness racing horses were down this year, with its chief organizer pointing to continued caution by buyers unsure about future financial returns from the sport.

Thomas Winebrener, who ran the Chesapeake Yearling Sale held at Rosecroft Raceway Sept. 17, also pointed to timing issues that likely depressed this year's numbers. Sales receipts totaled $260,100 for 68 harness horses, also known as standardbred, compared with $395,000 for 70 horses last year.
