Statewide Smoking Ban Advances in Maryland Senate

Summary


A statewide smoking ban in bars and restaurants advanced farther Monday than ever before and could pass both General Assembly chambers by early next week.

The Senate Finance Committee, which has killed the bill in previous years, approved the ban by one vote - 6 to 5 - with Chairman Thomas "Mac" Middleton, D-Charles, casting the deciding vote. Middleton opposed the ban in years past but said several weeks ago he would allow the bill to pass his committee if he thought it had enough support to pass the entire Senate.
