Turning waste to energy

Regional officials have chosen a unit of Houston-based Waste Management Inc. to build and operate a proposed waste-to-energy incinerator in Frederick County. Wheelabrator Technologies, based in Hampton, N.H., would construct the $332 million complex pending project approval by the Frederick County and Carroll County governments over the next two months. Proponents cite dwindling landfill space while opponents favor increased recycling and say the plant would pollute the air. Wheelabrator says the incinerator could be ready by 2014 to burn up to 1,500 tons of trash daily and would produce enough electricity to power 60,000 homes.
