Md. export picture brightens

Maryland's rate of exports was more than twice the national rate last year, according to the Department of Business and Economic Development. In 2008, the department said Maryland exported $11.4 billion in goods, mostly to Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom. Bill Burwell, director of the U.S. Export Assistance Center, said Maryland businesses have substantial competitive advantages over other states in exporting goods to challenging world markets. Maryland's exports to China increased 28 percent to $570 million last year. The fastest growing markets for Maryland are Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Russia and Chile.
